What 144 Etsy First Listing Photos Show
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 px on the shortest side and a landscape or square first photo. We measured the first photo of 144 listings that ranked on the first page of Etsy search to see what sellers actually upload.
How we measured
On October 9, 2026 we searched Etsy for 12 common handmade and vintage-style products and took the first 12 organic results for each, skipping listings marked as ads: 144 listings in total. For each one we downloaded the first listing photo, the one that becomes the search thumbnail, at the full size Etsy serves.
Pixel size and orientation were measured from that file. We then looked at every photo by hand and sorted it into three groups: a plain backdrop, the product worn or held by a person, or a styled scene. We also counted photos with text or graphics added on top.
- Searches: ceramic mug, personalized necklace, hoop earrings, soy candle, crochet blanket, leather wallet, wooden cutting board, macrame wall hanging, canvas tote bag, dog collar, linen dress and wall art print
- First 12 organic results per search, ads excluded
- Checks: pixel size, orientation, background type and text overlays
56% met the 2000 px recommendation
The median first photo was exactly 2000 px on its shortest side. 80 of 144 (56%) were 2000 px or more on the shortest side, which is what Etsy recommends, and 86 (60%) reached 2000 px on the longest side. The largest file was 3000 px, so Etsy appears to serve big uploads at no more than 3000 px.
Only 6 photos (4%) were under 1000 px on the shortest side, and just one, at 550 px, was below Etsy's 635 px minimum. The most common sizes were 2000 × 2000 px (20 photos), 3000 × 3000 px (16), 1024 × 1024 px (7) and 2000 × 3000 px (7).
- Median shortest side: 2000 px
- Shortest side 2000 px or more: 80 photos, 56%
- Shortest side under 1000 px: 6 photos, 4%
- Below the 635 px minimum: 1 photo
72% followed the landscape or square advice
Half of the first photos (72, 50%) were square and 32 (22%) were landscape, so 104 of 144 (72%) matched Etsy's recommendation. The other 40 (28%) were portrait, most often 3:4 or 2:3.
Portrait photos clustered in categories built around a person. 11 of the 12 linen dress results were portrait, and wearable products such as necklaces and earrings were shot on a model more often than not.
- Square: 72 photos, 50%
- Portrait: 40 photos, 28%
- Landscape: 32 photos, 22%
Only 17% used a plain backdrop
Etsy is the opposite of Amazon here. Just 24 of the 144 first photos (17%) showed the product on a plain backdrop, and none of those were pure white. 44 (31%) showed the product worn or held by a person, and 76 (53%) placed it in a styled scene such as a kitchen counter, a bed or a living room wall. For comparison, 62% of the Amazon main images we measured were pure white.
The mix depends on the product. All 12 cutting board results were styled scenes and all 12 linen dresses were worn by a model, while dog collars were the one search where most first photos (8 of 12) used a plain backdrop. 11 photos (8%) had text or graphics added on top.
- Styled scene: 76 photos, 53%
- Worn or held by a person: 44 photos, 31%
- Plain backdrop: 24 photos, 17%
- Text or graphics added: 11 photos, 8%
Search showed a 4:5 thumbnail
On the search pages we collected, Etsy showed each first photo as a 4:5 portrait crop: 255 × 319 px in one window size and 765 × 956 px in a wider one. A centered 4:5 crop of a square photo keeps 80% of its width, and on a 3:2 landscape photo it keeps only about half. Etsy lets sellers adjust the thumbnail position, and other places such as shop pages can crop differently, so the useful habit is to keep the product near the center with space on every side.
What this means for your listings
Most first-page sellers upload at least 2000 px, and almost none go below 1000 px, so size is the easy part. The bigger difference from other marketplaces is the style: on Etsy, a product in use or in a real setting is the norm for the first photo, not the exception.
- Export at 2000 px or more on the shortest side
- Use a square or landscape first photo unless the product is worn
- Show the product in use or in a setting that fits its category
- Keep the product centered so the search thumbnail does not cut it
Limits of this study
This is one day of searches from one signed-in account in Singapore, and Etsy personalizes search results, so another shopper may see different listings. We measured the files Etsy serves, which can differ from the original uploads in format and file size, so we do not report those. The study measures photos only; it does not show how any photo affects sales.
