Etsy Listing Photo Checker

Check your first listing photo against Etsy's image guidelines before you publish: size, orientation, format, file size, transparency, and whether the product stays visible when Etsy crops it into a thumbnail.

Etsy shows the first photo as a cropped thumbnail in search, on shop pages and in the app, and it cuts a different shape in each place. A photo that looks fine in the editor can lose the product at the edges, show a transparent background as black, or sit lower in search because it is too small. This checker reads the image in your browser and tells you what passes and what to fix.

  1. Drop your photos

Add up to 40 listing photos. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Read the results

Each check shows pass, review or fix, with the measured value.

  3. Fix and check again

Use the free Etsy resizer for size and margins, then run it again.

The checks

  • Size — Etsy recommends at least 2000 px in width and height. Below 635 px on either side, the first photo may make the listing show up lower in search
  • Orientation — Etsy recommends a landscape or square first photo, so the center of the image stays in the cropped thumbnails
  • Format — Etsy supports JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG and HEIC
  • File size — Etsy notes that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection
  • Transparency — transparent PNGs are not supported, and transparent areas appear black on Etsy
  • Thumbnail crop — on a plain background, the checker finds the product and tests whether it fits inside a centered square crop
  • Search thumbnail — the same test for a centered 4:5 crop, the shape we saw Etsy search use for first photos
  • Space around — a warning if the product touches the edge or fills more than 90% of the frame

Why the thumbnail crop matters

Etsy crops the first photo to square, portrait and landscape thumbnails in different parts of the site. Etsy's own advice is to shoot further back than you think you need, keep the most important part of the item in the center, and leave enough border that every crop keeps the whole product. You can fine-tune each crop with the thumbnail adjustment tool when you edit the listing.

What it cannot check

The checker cannot tell whether a GIF is animated, whether colors are in sRGB, or whether the photo is in focus and shows the real item. On a busy or lifestyle background it cannot find the product edges, so it skips the crop test. Use it as a first pass and confirm the current guidelines in Etsy's Help Center.

Fixing a photo

If size, orientation or margins need work, the free Etsy Listing Photo Resizer centers the product on a 3000 × 2250 px or 2000 × 2000 px canvas with an even margin. If you need more photos for the other slots, AI can place the same product in styled scenes.

What size should my Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 px in width and height. The first photo needs at least 635 px each way, or the listing may show up lower in search.

Why does my PNG show a black background on Etsy?

Etsy does not support transparent PNGs, and transparent areas appear black. Export the image with a solid background before uploading.

Should the first Etsy photo be square or landscape?

Etsy recommends landscape or square, so the center of the image stays visible in the cropped thumbnails. Use the same shape for the other photos in the listing.

How is the thumbnail crop tested?

On a plain background, the checker finds the edges of the product and tests whether it fits inside a square cut from the center of the photo.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Every check runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Is the checker affiliated with Etsy?

No. MiniMaxVion is an independent studio. Etsy is a trademark of Etsy, Inc.
