What 279 Shopify Product Images Show

Shopify says 2048 × 2048 px usually displays best for square product images, and asks for one aspect ratio across your featured images. We measured the featured images of 279 products from 24 well-known Shopify brands to see what they actually do.

How we measured

On October 9, 2026 we read the public product feed of 24 well-known direct-to-consumer brands that run on Shopify and took the first 12 products each feed returned, leaving out gift cards: 279 products in total. For each product we recorded the featured image, which is the first image and the one collection pages show.

Pixel size, aspect ratio and file format come from the original image as stored by Shopify. Transparency was read from the pixels. We then looked at every opaque image and sorted it as a plain backdrop or a styled scene, measured the backdrop tone from the image border, and measured how much of the frame the product filled on the plain-backdrop images.

  • Brands: Allbirds, Beardbrand, Brooklinen, ColourPop, Cotopaxi, Death Wish Coffee, Fashion Nova, Glossier, Jenni Kayne, Knix, Kylie Cosmetics, Lomi, Misen, MVMT, Native, Olipop, Outdoor Voices, Parachute, Pura Vida, Rothy's, Stanley, Taylor Stitch, Tecovas and tentree
  • First 12 products in each public product feed, gift cards excluded
  • Checks: size, aspect ratio, format, transparency, background, fill and edges

Only 29% met the 2048 px recommendation

The median featured image was 1722 px on its longest side. 125 of 279 (45%) were 2000 px or larger, and 80 (29%) reached 2048 px. Only 8 were exactly 2048 × 2048 px. At the other end, 46 (16%) were 3000 px or more.

Five images were below 1000 px, all from two stores. Four images from one store were 4358 × 5811 px, or 25.3 megapixels, slightly above the 5000 px and 25 megapixel limit Shopify documents today.

  • Median longest side: 1722 px
  • 2048 px or larger: 80 images, 29%
  • 2000 px or larger: 125 images, 45%
  • Below 1000 px: 5 images, 2%

43% were portrait, none were landscape

159 featured images (57%) were square. The other 120 (43%) were portrait, and not a single one was landscape. The most common portrait ratio was 4:5 (49 images); the rest were spread across 2:3, 3:4, 5:6 and other ratios. Apparel brands leaned portrait, which shows a model or a full outfit at a larger size on phones, while the shoe, beauty and drinkware brands mostly used squares.

21 of 24 stores used one ratio for every product

Shopify's advice is to use the same aspect ratio for all featured images so products line up on collection pages. The brands follow it closely: 21 of the 24 stores used exactly one ratio across the products we sampled, and 13 used the exact same pixel size for every featured image.

The three exceptions mixed square images with 4:5 or 3:4 portraits. Whichever ratio a store picks, the strong pattern is that it picks one.

  • One aspect ratio across all sampled products: 21 of 24 stores
  • Identical pixel size for every featured image: 13 of 24 stores
  • Mixed square and portrait: 3 stores

Only 14% used a white background

Shopify has no white background rule, and these brands mostly do not use one. Of the 220 opaque images, 118 (54%) sat on an off-white or light gray backdrop, 41 (19%) on a brand color or a dark backdrop, and only 30 (14%) on white. The other 31 (14%) were styled scenes, mostly people wearing the product. For comparison, 62% of the Amazon main images we measured were pure white.

The other 59 images (21%) were transparent PNG cutouts from six stores. On a transparent image the theme's background color shows through, so the product sits on whatever the store design uses.

  • Off-white or light gray: 118 of 220 opaque images, 54%
  • Brand color or dark: 41, 19%
  • Styled scene: 31, 14%
  • White: 30, 14%
  • Transparent PNG cutouts: 59 of 279 images, 21%

Format, fill and image count

155 featured images (56%) were JPEG, 100 (36%) PNG, 23 (8%) WebP and 1 GIF. On the 189 opaque images with a plain backdrop, the median product filled 88% of the frame, and 64 (34%) touched or nearly touched the edge, often a model or a sleeve cropped on purpose. The median product had 6 images, and 17 products had only one.

What this means for your store

The one rule these brands follow almost without exception is consistency: one ratio, often one exact size, for every featured image. That matters more than hitting 2048 px exactly, since most of them do not.

You also do not need a white background on Shopify. An off-white or light gray backdrop, used on every product, is the most common choice among these stores.

  • Pick one aspect ratio, square or 4:5, and use it for every featured image
  • Export at 2000 to 2048 px so images stay sharp when zoomed
  • Choose one background, white, neutral or brand color, and keep it across the store
  • Leave a small margin so themes that crop do not cut the product

Limits of this study

This is a snapshot of 24 large brands on one day, and the first products in a feed are not necessarily the best sellers. Large brands have professional photography, so smaller stores may look different. The study measures images only; it does not show how any image affects sales.

What size do top Shopify stores use for product images?

In our sample of 279 featured images, the median longest side was 1722 px. 45% were 2000 px or larger and 29% reached Shopify's recommended 2048 px.

Should Shopify product images be square?

57% of the featured images we measured were square and 43% were portrait, most often 4:5. None were landscape. Either works if every product uses the same ratio.

Do Shopify product images need a white background?

No. Only 14% of the opaque featured images we measured were white. Most brands used an off-white or light gray backdrop, and 21% used transparent PNG cutouts.
