The checks
- Size — Shopify says 2048 × 2048 px usually displays best for square product images
- Limits — product images can be up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB
- Format — PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP are also accepted
- Shape — non-square images are flagged for review, since Shopify's size recommendation is for square images
- Matching ratios — the main images in a batch are compared, because Shopify asks for a consistent aspect ratio so collection pages line up
- Edges — on a plain background, a warning if the product touches the edge
Why matching ratios matter
When product images sit side by side on a collection page, images with different aspect ratios are shown at different sizes. Shopify's advice is to use one aspect ratio for all your featured images. Drop the main image of each product together, and the checker lists the ratios it found.
What it cannot check
The checker cannot see how your theme crops images, whether a GIF or WebP is animated, or how colors will look after Shopify removes the embedded color profile. Confirm the current limits in the Shopify Help Center.
