Amazon Main Image Requirements
Amazon's main image has to be pure white, large enough to zoom, and filled by the product. A background of RGB 250 looks white on screen and still fails. Here is what the measurable rules are, what page-one listings actually do, and how to check a file before you upload it.
What the main image is for
The main image is the picture in search results. If it breaks Amazon's image rules, the listing can be suppressed, which hides it from search even when the rest of the listing is fine. Off-white backgrounds and a product that sits too small in the frame are the failures that are hardest to see by eye.
The rules below are the ones a file can be measured against. The checker also flags text, badges and extra objects that sit on the white background. Lettering printed on the product, and whether the photo shows the real item, still need a person. Some categories add their own rules, including clothing and multipacks. Confirm the current wording in Seller Central before you publish, because enforcement differs by category.
Pure white means RGB 255, 255, 255
Amazon asks for a pure white background, which means every background pixel is RGB 255, 255, 255. A value of 250 or 253 looks white on most monitors. Studio lights, phone cameras and export presets often leave a light gray or a warm tint that nobody notices until a check reads the pixels.
Measure the border, not the middle of the product. Our checker tests a band 1% of the image wide. The background passes when the border is light and at least 97% of those light pixels are exactly 255. Transparent pixels fail. A lifestyle scene with a room, a desk or a colored backdrop fails.
In a sample of 144 first-page main images measured on October 9, 2026, 62% were pure RGB 255, 27% were near-white (253 to 254 in places) and 11% were not white at all. Near-white still showed up on page one, so a value of 254 is not automatic suppression. Exact 255 is still the safe file to upload, and it is the easiest failure to fix.
- Pass: border pixels are exactly RGB 255, 255, 255
- Fail: off-white, gray, warm white, a colored backdrop, or transparency
- Do not judge this on screen. Read the pixel values
The product should fill 85% of the frame
Amazon asks the product to fill 85% or more of the frame. Fill is the product's longest side compared with the frame, after the white margin is ignored. A bottle with a large empty margin around it fails even when the background is perfect.
On the 128 light-background images in that same sample, 88% met 85% fill and the median product filled 97% of the frame. Almost half had the product touching or nearly touching the edge. Ranking listings crop tighter than the minimum. Aim for about 90% or more, and keep a small margin so the product is not cut off in the search tile.
Fill can only be measured on a light background. If the main image is a room scene, fix the background first, then the crop.
- 85% is the minimum Amazon states
- Page-one median in our sample: 97%
- A product that touches the edge may be cropped in search. Leave a thin margin
Size, shape, format and file size
Zoom turns on at 1000 pixels on the longest side. Every one of the 144 page-one images met that. 40% were 2000 pixels or larger, which stays sharp when a shopper pinches in on a phone. 10,000 pixels is the upper limit. A 2000 × 2000 px square is the practical default.
Square is recommended for the main image because it fills the search tile. Other ratios are accepted and then shown with extra space around them. 82% of the page-one images we measured were square.
JPEG is the preferred format. PNG, TIFF and GIF are accepted. All 144 images in the sample were served as JPEG. Keep each file at 10 MB or under. A 2000 px JPEG is usually well under 1 MB.
- Longest side: at least 1000 px, 2000 px recommended, 10,000 px maximum
- Shape: square for the main image
- Format: JPEG preferred; PNG, TIFF and GIF accepted
- File size: 10 MB or less
What a file check cannot decide
Passing the measurements does not guarantee Amazon will accept the image. The checker can flag text, badges and extra objects on the white background. A person still has to look at lettering printed on the product, a watermark that sits only on the product, and claims the product cannot support. The main image should show the product you sell, not a rendering of a different one.
Clothing, shoes and multipacks often have extra rules about mannequins, packaging and how many units may appear. Those are category rules, not pixel rules. Use the checker as the first pass, then confirm the listing in Seller Central.
How to fix a file that fails
If the size, the shape or the fill fails, and the photo was already shot on white or a plain light background, pad it to a 2000 px pure white square. The free Amazon image resizer does that in the browser and leaves a margin of about 7%, which comes out near 86% fill. Lower the margin if you want the product larger.
If the background is a table, a room or a color, padding will not remove it. Replace the background with pure white first, keep the product itself unchanged, then resize and run the checker again. Do this before you re-upload. Guessing and re-submitting the same file is how a suppression stays in place.
- Off-white or a busy background: make a pure white main image, then check it
- Too small, not square, or under 1000 px: resize to a 2000 px white square
- Text, badges or extra objects on the white background: the checker flags them. Remove them before you upload
What are Amazon's main image requirements?
The measurable rules are a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product filling at least 85% of the frame, at least 1000 px on the longest side, and a file of 10 MB or less. JPEG is preferred and square is recommended. Confirm category-specific rules in Seller Central.
Does the background have to be exactly RGB 255?
Yes, that is the stated rule. A value such as 250 looks white on screen and still fails a pixel check. In our sample of 144 page-one images, 27% were near-white rather than exact, so small deviations are not always enforced, but exact white is the safe upload.
What size should an Amazon main image be?
At least 1000 px on the longest side so zoom works. 2000 × 2000 px is the usual choice. In our sample every page-one image was at least 1000 px and 40% were 2000 px or larger.
What if my main image is suppressed?
Check the border pixels, the product fill and whether the image has text, logos or props. Fix the file and upload the corrected image. Do not re-upload the same file and hope the review changes.
How can I check my own main image?
Drop it into the free Amazon Main Image Checker. It measures background, fill, size, shape, format, file size, and text or extra objects on the white background. It also shows a search tile and a listing-image checklist. The image is never uploaded, and the check does not use credits.
