AI Product Photography Prompt Guide
Product prompts work best when they separate non-negotiable product facts from the creative decisions around composition, light, surface, and campaign mood.
Document the product before styling the scene
Begin with the facts that must remain accurate: product category, shape, material, finish, color, label placement, and distinctive components. Treat this as the locked portion of the brief.
Then add the creative layer. Describe the surface, background, prop system, camera angle, lighting, and customer context. Separating facts from styling makes review easier and reduces accidental product changes.
- Locked facts: geometry, materials, color, label, included parts
- Creative direction: setting, props, light, camera, mood
- Delivery context: marketplace, product page, paid ad, email, or social
Match the prompt to the ecommerce placement
A marketplace listing usually needs a clean silhouette, even light, and minimal visual ambiguity. A product-page hero can use more dimensional light and brand atmosphere. A social ad may need negative space for copy and a stronger opening visual.
Name the placement in the prompt. “Centered listing image on seamless warm white” produces a different visual hierarchy from “vertical paid-social hero with negative space above the product for a headline.”
Build a studio prompt
For a studio frame, specify surface, background transition, key light direction, fill level, reflections, and camera angle. Product materials react differently: glass needs controlled highlights, metal needs readable gradients, and fabric needs grazing light to show texture.
Example: “Matte black wireless speaker, exact cylindrical silhouette, three-quarter front angle on charcoal acrylic, large softbox from upper left, narrow edge light, controlled low-contrast reflection, clean premium ecommerce hero, no props.”
Build a lifestyle prompt
Lifestyle imagery should explain who uses the product and where it belongs without burying the item. Describe the environment, time of day, human interaction, and visual emphasis.
Keep the product as the primary subject. If people or props dominate, simplify the scene or explicitly state the product position, scale, and focus plane.
Create a consistent campaign set
Choose a small set of repeatable rules: one lighting direction, a limited palette, consistent lens language, and two or three surface materials. Reuse those rules across hero, detail, and lifestyle frames.
Generate the key hero image first. Use it as a visual reference for later edits and motion so the campaign does not drift between unrelated styles.
Run a commercial accuracy check
Compare every generated frame against approved product references. Check dimensions, ports, closures, typography, logos, ingredient claims, accessories, and reflections. AI output should not be treated as evidence of real product features.
For regulated categories, route final imagery through the same legal and compliance review used for conventional photography.
Can I use AI product photos on an ecommerce listing?
You can use generated assets where your platform and local rules allow it, but verify product accuracy, rights, required disclosures, and advertising claims before publishing.
How do I keep the product shape accurate?
Use clear reference images, describe locked product features explicitly, and make focused edits around the product instead of repeatedly regenerating the entire frame.
What background works best for product photography?
Choose the background for the placement. Listings favor clean separation; campaign images can use contextual surfaces and environments that support the brand story.
